Taketomi Island's Tanadui Festival

  1. Taketomi Island's Tanadui Festival

The history of the island’s Tanadui festival goes back to 600 years ago and this event has been designated by the government of Japan as a significant intangible folk cultural asset.
Centering around an auspicious two-day period—on the days of both Kanoetora and Kanoto—traditional performing arts are done in dedication to the gods.
There is a saying in Taketomi, “Nothing is more precious than working hand in hand with each other,” a maxim that forms the basis of the islanders’ way of life.
Taketomi natives who live in other regions of Japan come back to participate in the festival as well, adding to the already large number of participants and the festive mood envelops the island.
